NOTIS History regarding CSU Library  [from Library Cataloging Dept meeting minutes/notes]

1981

April 10, 1981     Automation proposal accepted

June 8, 1981       Write down all processes you’d like automated in the future.

1982

Jan. 11, 1982      Rept of the Automation Committee:

We have received $110,000 to begin the automation system. $50,000 will be used to purchase the Northwestern package. Combining our in-house tape with the OCLC tape will be the first step and should be done in July. The next step will be the automation of the circulation system and then the card catalog.

Tables have been ordered (30 x 72) and we hope to have terminals for them by April.

March 22, 1982

The terminals were moved to the basement 3-19-82.

AMIGOS workshop will be March 25, 1982

Aug. 2, 1982

December (no date)-Automation meeting explaining the “VPI”, “NOTIS”, and “TCJC” programs … Oscar Rose.

Aug. 16, 1982

The tentative plan for retrocon is to update the OCLC screen if author, title, and pages match. If the screen matches exactly put a blue check after the accession number, if the screen does not match exactly put a blue check with a circle around it. Later when the in-house system is working, go through the shelf list again and correct, on the in-house system everything that has a blue check with a circle.

Oct. 6, 1982

Each person is to create his/her own password for keying into the CSU system …passwords need to be created for all students …

Nov. 8, 1982

Because of the new Telex system, the cables will be redone.

On retrocon we will probably start with the H’s and P’s.

Conversion—that is the shut-down of key punch is scheduled to take place at the close of business day, Dec. 11th…Actual time for installation of the new Telex machines, in exchange for the IBM ones is still in doubt.

The two volume manual concerning operation of the in-house system is ready to go all except for the index.

Feb. 13, 1983

It is hoped that the Telex terminals will be up today and that the IBM terminals will no longer be in use. There is a possibility that the in-house system will be up before March 1.

Feb. 28, 1983

Ron will need the NOTIS number of books and other material now in hand because TELEX will have “order” instead of “coll” on the holding screen. Ron will make the change.

Mar. 30 1983

If a NOTIS record needs deleting, we are to give Carolyn the note … She is authorized to delete the entire record.

Ron and IT/computer center personnel have decided to cancel order for 16 Telex terminals, because of slow response time. They are going to decide whether to go ahead with the use of Telex equipment or go back to the IBM terminals which we have stored in the basement.

Filing out front. It has ceased, and we are to check our assigned drawers. The catalog is now “frozen”, i.e. no changes will be made except for pulling cards for re-class. Corrections will be done on NOTIS.

Jul. 11, 1983

The NOTIS index does not acknowledge the ampersand or numbers in titles therefore we need to spell them out.

Aug. 1, 1983

Aug. 9 the Tulsa public library personnel will be here to look at our automation system.

We have done retrocon on 17 drawers (approximately 7%) of our cataloged collection.
